Divorce Morality
Your morality should be the ethics of the profession and nothing more. Become a professional and don’t let your religious consideration overshadow your professional obligations. I mean, how can you practice criminal law and say you won’t defend certain categories of people because of your faith?

You were trained to be a lawyer and no other obligations are more sacred than those you hold by virtue of your profession. Accept all briefs you can handle competently.

Now you are a lawyer and not a student of law. The earlier you make that distinction the easier the travels through the rough road of early post call practice becomes.

You just found out that legal practice isn’t a ball or the Eldorado you read in John Grisham’s novel? Welcome to the world! Nothing is always as it seems or was painted. The practice of law is a totally different picture from what was painted in law classes.Continue reading

10 commandments 2

THE NEW WIGS’ 10 COMMANDMENTS PART 1

Lawyers Commandments

Dearest New Wig,

The world out there is tough, the road is rough. I’m not trying to scare you but believe me, the smiles and backslappings end at your call to bar ceremony. Not everybody who celebrates with you at your call ceremony celebrates for you. Many celebrate their own gain in your success. You must have heard everyone who congratulates you say “now I have a lawyer I can call on so I will be looking for trouble” that it has become a cliché you are used to and an innocent joke that makes you feel you have arrived.Continue reading

Issa Adedokun, NBA Ikeja, YLF President

Issa Adedokun, NBA Ikeja, YLF President

YLF 2

We got Mr. Issa Adedokun, the visionary president of the NBA Ikeja, YLF to speak to us on this year’s annual seminar of the body. Here were his responses to our questions.

The 4th Edition of the NBA Ikeja Branch YLF annual seminar is coming up again this year, what should we expect?

As we all know, law is a noble profession and the society places a great demand on every individual practitioner out there to be among other things, driven with dynamism at work and be above board in carrying out his/her duties with great distinction. The YLF constantly organises several projects/programmes aimed at  capacity building for young lawyers. One of such  is an annual seminar targeted towards an average of about one thousand lawyers, In house Solicitors, Directors/Managers and Consultants from different jurisdictions.Continue reading

Today, we continue with the concluding part of our post “How to Make Extra Income as a New Wig”. You can read part 1 here. Happy reading.

Edit books/Manuscripts

I have lost count of the number of times I had to do that for people and folks get to edit my works too. Essays, blog posts, books academic writings. I am thinking of charging fees because I really spend time to do that especially editing books, manuscripts and even business proposals. I have had cause to even help out with some research and improvements on the work. That takes my time. I mean, if everyone thinks am good editing at their work, then they should pay for it. If you are just like me, it’s “money for hand, back for ground things” from now on. No dulling abeg!

HOW TO MAKE EXTRA INCOME AS A NEW WIG

www.ostregalaw.com

The biggest challenge that many new wigs face in the early years of their career is the issue of lean purses. I mean everyone knows that at that stage most new wigs are broke arse nigaas many of who still depend on family support to help them learn the ropes in their career.

No one trusts you enough to give you any big brief to do on your own considering the fact that you’re a green horn. So you just have to make do with the crumbs called briefs you can get at that stage and the little income you make monthly.

Areas of Interest

“Areas of Interest” is one knotty element I see in many CVs. I deliberately avoided including that in the earlier parts of this course because, I don’t recommend including that in CVs.
